BREAKING: Sandra Layne Sentenced To 20-40 Years In Death Of Grandson Jonathan Hoffman

layne7West Bloomfield grandmother Sandra Layne will spend 20 to 40 years in prison for shooting her grandson to death, the equivalent of a life sentence for the 75-year-old retired teacher.

Layne, shackled in orange jail garb and surrounded by deputies, was sentenced this afternoon in Oakland County Circuit Court.

It brings to a close a case that garnered national attention and tore apart a family already teetering on the edge.

Judge Denise Langford Morris, in handing down the sentence, called it a tragic case. She said there a lot of unanswered questions remain, but what troubled her was why she didn’t call police first that day or leave and why she kept shooting 17-year-old Jonathan Hoffman.

UPDATE: Convicted Grandma Asks For Short Prison Term In Grandson’s Shooting

layne4A 75-year-old West Bloomfield woman convicted of killing her teen grandson is asking for just a year in custody for murder, on top of a mandatory two-year prison sentence for using a gun.

Sandra Layne’s attorney filed the request this week ahead of her sentencing April 18. Jerome Sabbota told a judge that the public doesn’t need to be protected from Layne, nor does the prison system need to rehabilitate her.

“Sandra Layne is in her own prison. … There is nothing that anybody can do to turn the clock back to the awful events that occurred on May 18, 2012,” Sabbota wrote. “There are no winners or losers in a case such as this.”

Oakland-County-roundabout-plan-jpgOAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. -Oakland County’s romance with roundabouts is taking a major step with one of its busiest intersections.About 40,000 vehicles each day travel Orchard Lake Road where it crosses 14 Mile Road. Northwestern Highway ends at Orchard Lake Road just a few hundred yards to the north, adding to the congestion.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Road Commission of Oakland County laid out the plans. By next year, the traffic will be handled by a roundabout, much like those already in place west of the intersection. Some drivers hate roundabouts.

“Youre on the inside lane, theyre right in front of you. I mean, its scary,” said Pat Cooney, of West Bloomfield Township.

The Hoffman Murder Trial – Day Five: Jonathan Hoffman Not Likely Under Influence Of Synthetic Drug At Time Of Death

hofmanPontiac — Jurors in the trial of a 75-year-old West Bloomfield Township woman charged with fatally shooting her 17-year-old grandson heard a toxicologist testify Monday the teen had the presence of Spice or K2, a synthetic drug, in his urine but was likely not under the influence and could not say with any certainty when he ingested the substance.

Sandra Layne is charged with open murder in the May 18 shooting of Jonathan Hoffman. Her attorney claimed she was in fear of Hoffman because of his frequent violent outbursts and escalating drug use.

Dr. Gary Kunsman, Oakland Countys chief forensic toxicologist, testified Hoffmans blood and urine samples were sent to an outside lab to test for K2 because Hoffman had an alleged history of abusing the substance, legally sold as a room deodorizer but smoked to provide a marijuana-type high.

“Most synthetic drugs have active proponents similar to marijuana,” said Kunsman. “An individual who smoked in the evening and the following day, there would be no active drugs in the blood but most likely in the urine.”

The Hoffman Murder Trial – Day Three: Jurors Watch Gory Video Of Death Scene

Pontiac — Jurors viewed a gory, 17-minute silent video Thursday of the blood-spattered condominium where investigators say a 75-year-old West Bloomfield Township woman fatally shot her teenage grandson several times last May.

Sandra Layne is charged with open murder in the May death of Jonathan Hoffman, 17, during an argument at her condominium in a gated community on Brookview Lane. Hoffman had been staying with his grandparents to complete his senior year at Farmington Central High. His parents were in the process of divorce and moved to Arizona.

The video, filmed by township police officer David St. Germaine the day of the shooting, followed a path of bloody footprints on hardwood floors and beige carpeting throughout the condo, up and down stairs and finally to a loft area where the furniture and walls and bed sheets were smeared with blood .Hoffman is believed to have finally collapsed in the loft area during a 911 emergency call to police in which he begged for help.

Layne — who previously ignored slide projections of evidence presented by Assistant Chief Prosecutor Paul Walton — sat transfixed by the video, her head rocking side to side as the camera slowly panned throughout the death scene. The hand-held camera stopped at bullet holes, blood stains, live ammo and shell casings, marked by placards.
