“This is going to be his college essay.”

Bloomfield Hills father Kenny Lipschutz — the owner of the above quote — couldn’t be more proud of his 16-year-old son, who recently alerted Birmingham officials to a woman he suspected of stealing his mother’s purse. The woman, 34-year-old Ferndale resident Jennifer Ann Chiotti, was recently charged with a felony in connection with the incident.

“It’s a great story and I’m proud as (heck) of this kid,” said Lipschutz of his son, Cranbrook High School sophomore Michael, “and he’s mine!”

After the Bloomfield Hills teen helped track down the accused purse-snatcher in front of the Birmingham 8 Theater, local police said while those affected in the Sunday incident were lucky to retrieve their property, many similar thefts go unpunished.

Craig Schubiner’s Bloomfield Park Lawsuit Testimony to Begin in Circuit Court

Court testimony is expected to begin Tuesday and could take more than a month in Bloomfield Park developer Craig Schubiner’s lawsuit against two companies that invested with him in the failed mixed-use development.

Attorneys completed jury selection and most of opening statements today before Judge Michael Warren of Oakland County Circuit Court. Attorneys expect witnesses to take the stand Tuesday, and the trial itself could last into late August.

Schubiner, of The Harbor Cos. in Bloomfield Township, previously has alleged that Developers Diversified Realty Corp. of Beachwood, Ohio, and New York-based Coventry Real Estate Advisors cost him his share of an estimated $165 million in lost profits.

UPDATE: Bloomfield Township Grants Limited Liquor License for Maple Theater

Fans of the Maple Theater will be able to drink alcohol there when it reopens after renovations this fall, but theyll need a movie ticket to do it.

The Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees on Monday approved a Class C liquor license for the 37-year-old art theaters new ownership, with the caveat that only movie patrons will be served. The provision can be removed by the township after six months of operations. The probationary clause was the final issue needed to resolve months of negotiations over site plans, zoning variances and business operations. And it nearly stopped the entire project from moving forward.

UPDATE: Bloomfield Township Board Continues to Drive Maple Theater Owners Crazy

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP — Approval of a Class C liquor license for Maple Theater was put on hold for another week following the June 11 Board of Trustees meeting.

The board voted unanimously to table the vote until June 25 in order to allow attorneys for the applicants, Jon and Lauren Goldstein, to make several clarifications to the written request.

Bloomfield Township police Capt. Scott McCanham told the board that following a thorough investigation of Cloud Nine Theater Partners Inc. per the Michigan Liquor Control Commission, the department was satisfied with the Goldsteins’ application and background.

“I’ve had the opportunity to meet with the Goldsteins, and they’ve explained the operation to me and their experience with this type of theater,” he said.

“I’ve queried the Emagine theaters in Woodhaven and Rochester Hills and found them to be free of any LLC violations. As a department, we don’t have any objections to the operation being put to the board for approval.”

UPDATE: Bloomfield Township Still Undecided Over Maple Theater Liquor License

Patrons of the Maple Theater will have to wait just a little longer to learn whether they can sip on a glass of wine or a frothy Michigan brew while enjoying their movies.

The Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees on Monday decided to table an application for a Class C liquor license at the theater, known for its artistic and independent films. The decision came just two weeks after the board voted to allow a zoning variance for the property just west of Telegraph Road that would make a liquor license possible.

Township Treasurer Dan Devine raised concerns at that time about an outdated township liquor-license policy, and said some remained Monday. He commended the board for taking a deliberate look and trying to establish a contract that has standards in place with the applicant before the matter is considered again on June 25.

Mitt Romney Dated Detroit Philanthropist Max Fisher’s Daughter

The Washington Post had a long report today on Mitt Romney’s prep school days at Detroit’s (well, Bloomfield Hills’) Cranbrook School—a fact that does him no favors with Michiganders who didn’t attend—and how he was a bit of a bully. Romney has apologized, but there is a hidden gem buried near the end of the story: Mitt briefly dated a Jewish girl!

The lucky lady was Mary Fisher, the daughter of Max Fisher, who was an enormous philanthropist to Detroit and Jewish organizations and prominently involved in George Romney’s political campaigns
