Washington — Gov. Rick Snyder will travel to Israel in June in the latest of a series of trade missions designed to boost Michigan exports.

“Gov. Snyder is indeed planning a trip to Israel in June, though we’re not in a position to share details yet,” spokeswoman Sara Wurfel said.

Michigan exported $117 million in goods to Israel in 2012, the 19th most, and nearly $1.5 billion since 1996.

Snyder has led a series of trips to try to boost Michigan businesses. In September, 21 Michigan companies held a 10-day trade mission to China. He plans another trip to Asia this fall, making stops in Japan and China.

Farrakhan Blames Detroit Woes On “Satanic Jews” In Antisemitic Rant At Prominent Detroit Church

farrakahnSpeaking in a Detroit church Friday night, Minister Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam said that he plans to visit former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick in prison Saturday as he tried to portray him as a victim of white racism.

“I’m going to visit him tomorrow in Milan, Michigan,” Farrakhan, 80, said to loud applause.

Addressing a packed audience inside Fellowship Chapel in Detroit, Farrakhan said that while Kilpatrick may have committed some mistakes, white politicians have committed similar acts and gotten away with it.

East Lansing School Files Criminal Complaint Against High Schoolers Who Carved Swastika Into Jewish Student’s Locker

stop hateEast Lansing police said Monday they are seeking malicious destruction of property charges against three high school students after their Jewish classmate found a swastika carved into her locker.

Lt. Scott Wriggelsworth said police, school administrators and the victim’s family agreed the best way to handle the incident was for her three classmates to be charged with malicious destruction of property, a misdemeanor. The Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office has not made a determination.

“The school is also being listed as the victim,” Wriggelsworth said. “There were two lockers damaged. One of them being the victim’s locker who is Jewish and the victim of the other locker, was not (Jewish).”

Police began investigating the incident after it happened in late April, Wriggelsworth said.

Area Students Visit Businesses To Offer Guidance, Prepare For Roles As Rabbis

Farmington Hills — On a recent Friday afternoon, Rod Brown stood amid the racks of cotton shirts and shiny shoes at his shop on Northwestern Highway, murmuring prayers in Hebrew while leather straps encircled his arm.

Balanced atop his head was a black box holding scrolls of parchment inscribed with verses from the Torah, the Jewish sacred text.

The Shirt Box co-owner was taking part in a daily ritual with the help of two teenage rabbis-in-training from the Lubavitch Yeshiva-International School for Chabad Leadership in Oak Park.

Brown has spent years interrupting his workday for such visits — a tradition he welcomes as a spiritual refresher. The leather straps he wore symbolize a bond with God.

Whole Foods Caps Peter Cummings’ 15-year Midtown Renewal Plan

cumingsfbAny would-be real estate developer needs a variety of traits — good with numbers and a knowledge of construction to name two — but perhaps the most important trait is perseverance.

Case in point: Developer Peter Cummings’ 15-year effort to build out the site of the new Whole Foods grocery store, which opens in early June in Detroit’s Midtown district.

“I certainly ended up a long-term holder,” Cummings reminisced recently of his efforts with the 4-acre site on the north side of Mack between Woodward and John R.

When Cummings bought the parcel in the ’90s, it was vacant but for a bank branch. But it seemed ideally located at one of Midtown’s crossroads. Cummings’ conception was always to have at least some residential on the site.

William Davidson Foundation President Jonathan Aaron may have to look elsewhere to split the foundation’s roughly $1 billion in reported assets into two entities.

Aaron, principal member of The Velvel Group LLC in Southfield, had filed suit in Oakland County Probate Court on March 1 seeking to divide the assets of the foundation. Aaron is the son-in-law of the late Bill Davidson’s widow, Karen.

But Probate Judge Daniel O’Brien said Tuesday afternoon that his court does not have jurisdiction over the case because the foundation is incorporated in Delaware. He said he plans to issue an order to that effect by the end of the week.

The foundation was created by the late William Davidson, owner of Auburn Hills-based Guardian Industries Corp. Davidson died in 2009.

Metro Jews Celebrate Shavuot Holiday Marking 3325 Years Since Torah Given On Mount Sinai

shavuotAaron Schwartz and his family, like many other Metro Detroit Jews, plan to stay up late tonight for the two-day Shavuot holiday.

The Jewish holiday starts at sundown, commemorating Jews receiving the Torah at Mt. Sinai after the exodus from Egypt. Synagogues across Metro Detroit plan late-night sacred text study sessions and other events.

“It increases our awareness of our people, the religion,” said Schwartz, 37, a planner from Oak Park who expects to attend sessions with his wife and 7-month-old daughter. “Everything you learn deepens the spirituality and the connection.”

Shavuot in Hebrew means “weeks” — a nod to the seven weeks since Passover.

Connected to that holy day, which marked physical liberation, the period involves spiritual freedom and revelation, said Rabbi Aaron Bergman of Adat Shalom Synagogue in Farmington Hills, which plans services tonight.

Destination Shanghai: JDC Conference In China Emphasizes Need For Global Jewish Outreach

By Kelli Saperstein

SapersteinI recently  had the opportunity to travel to China with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee young professionals group Entwine. JDC, or the “Joint,” is the world’s leading Jewish humanitarian assistance organization. Detroit’s own Penny Blumenstein is the current president. Entwine encompasses young Jewish leaders, influencers and advocates who seek to make a meaningful impact on global Jewish needs and international humanitarian issues.

While JDC may be known best for caring for the aging population in the former Soviet Union or coordinating Operation Moses, the largest covert evacuation of Ethiopian Jews to Israel, it impacts millions of lives in more than 70 countries.

The need in China can be summarized as follows: thousands of transient young professional Jews living in Communist China where Judaism is not a recognized religion. These individuals are spending a formative period of their lives in an area where it is difficult for them to gain exposure to Jewish community and Jewish identity.

Jennifer Gilbert’s Doodle Home Changes Strategy To Focus On Boosting Efficiency For Interior Designers

jennifergilbertArden Stephenson of New York and Abby Sikora of Detroit have never met face-to-face.

“But Abby has become my new best friend, I feel like I know her,” Stephenson told me last week.

This long-distance bond developed rapidly between the two women in recent months as they talked about lamps, rugs, fabric, curtains, prices, delivery dates.

Stephenson, owner of Arden Interior Architecture & Design, has designed luxury living spaces in homes from Malibu to Cape Cod to the Hamptons.

Sikora is a design assistant at Doodle Home, a young 23-person start-up located in downtown Detroit along with a cluster of other entrepreneurial ventures in the Quicken Loans corporate family. Founded in 2010 by Jennifer Gilbert, wife of Quicken Chairman Dan Gilbert, Doodle pivoted last year to focus on using technology to help interior designers boost efficiency, rather than trying to sell home furnishings directly to consumers online.
