Members of Pine Hill Congregational Church and Shir Shalom Temple in West Bloomfield Township joined together on Friday morning to make 50 ham sandwiches for people who are homeless in Detroit.
Bloomfield Hills resident Jerry Amster said that every month the Christian and Jewish churches join together to make a Saturday lunch of sandwiches, bananas, bottled water, cookies and cupcakes for the nonprofit “I Am My Brother’s Keeper.”
“I Am My Brother’s Keeper” provides transition housing for nearby residents who are homeless.
Amster, who calls himself the “token Jew” at his wife Lynn’s non-denominational Christian church, said, “I don’t care what church you go to. After all, Jesus was a Jew, as I recall.”
